An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a serious condition characterized by a bulging, weakened area in the wall of the abdominal aorta, which is the major blood vessel that supplies blood to the body. The aorta, in this case, expands or balloons outwards due to the weakening of its wall.
If an AAA grows too large or ruptures, it can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding. AAA often develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms, hence it's
sometimes referred to as a "silent killer." It's commonly detected incidentally during routine medical exams or screenings for other conditions.
Risk factors for developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm include advanced age, tobacco use, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), family history of AAA, and certain genetic factors.
